My book is out!
After a few years and a very quick but intense turnaround, my book, The Rising of The Elements, is finally out. To finally get this book out there after so long is so very overwhelming.
To fill people in, I initially started TROTE a few years ago when I uploaded a short story called Looking Into The Water onto a now defunct website where I was contacted by a publishing house who gave me a trilogy deal. Unfortunately, I 'abandoned' the book because of 1) studying, and 2) I didn't know where to go with the story. The publishing house let me go because I hadn't worked on the book for a year so, after I finished my final year of sixth form and knew where I wanted to go with the story, I decided to move on to CreateSpace, an independent print-on-demand publisher that gives you total control over your book. I then worked on TROTE intensively from July 2015 to February 2016, completing the story and finalising designs, as well as proofreading and 'promoting'.
Now, with the book finally out, I thought I'd discuss some things that I've been asked a few times. For more, check out my 'book updates'.
Potential spoilers.
Favourite character(s)
I have a few favourites overall, as well as chapter-specific favourite characters. Perhaps I'll discuss the chapter-specifics later on, but my overall favourite characters are Warren Potes, Darcy Cassano and Marek Reeves. Warren I can relate to a few of my friends, he's comedic and energetic but very aware and considerate. Darcy is a character that I loved writing, she's both very fiesty and assertive and bubbly and loving, her character switches easily throughout the story which I find was a fun way to show that female characters don't always have to be two-dimensional, one-personality characters. Marek is another favourite of mine because his story drives the plot throughout the final chapters, although the character only appearing in a few chapters. A certain scene involving Marek was very difficult to write because I admire his character so much and what he did for Isaac and another (trying to avoid spoilers here), which I reflect throughout the remainder of the story as Marek becomes a key part of the Uprising.
Favourite chapter
I think a few people would assume the author favours the first or last chapters because they bring the story to an opening and a close, but I very much enjoy the seventh chapter; The Bellators and The Boy. It's a short chapter which was intended as a filler before the 'start of the end', however, it does contain a huge amount of character development, specifically for Isaac, Darcy, Warren, Ange and Claude. The thing about this chapter that I really enjoy is how fun and simplistic it is (towards the end), especially with the introduction of Robbie. Towards the end of the chapter, I tried to establish a really strong connection between Isaac and Warren which I enjoyed writing, I'm actually rather jealous of their friendship.
Favourite scene
Like my favourite character, I have multiple favourite scenes. I like how Isaac and Jenna first meet, that's a special scene because it seems to be a very one-sided conversation and the start of something special (hint hint). I also like the funeral in chapter 8, I tried to make it very visual and almost holy(?), I enjoyed writing an emphasis on colours and a stained-glass window in this scene (is that weird?). My other favourite scene would be when Warren confides in Isaac in chapter 7, it's an awkward yet touching scene that I really do love, it gives Warren a spurt of development and character. Definitely one of my favourite scenes to write.
Least favourite character
Saddest/hardest scene to write
Isaac in his bedroom mourning in chapter 1/Maxine in chapter 6/Alice's eulogy in chapter 8/The subordinates waking up in chapter 9.
Hardest character to write
Deatra Allstrong, her sinister personality develops throughout the story and she genuinely angers me, even though I created her.
That's all. More to follow soon.
